Earlier this summer, Swiss artist Thomas Hirschhorn set about building a little village amid the Forest Houses, a city housing project in the South Bronx. This unique artwork, titled Gramsci Monument after the Italian political theorist Antonio Gramsci, comprises an exhibition space, a workshop, a stage, an Internet area, a lounge, and the Gramsci Bar—all of which are overseen by residents of the Forest Houses, some of whom worked alongside Hirschhorn to construct Gramsci Monument from the ground up. (Read more here.) The result of all of this considered effort, writes art critic Peter Schjeldahl in the new issue of The New Yorker, is “this year’s most captivating artwork.”
