“For Los Angeles magazine’s third annual photo portfolio, Amy Feitelberg, the magazine’s photo editor, asked her roster of regular photographers to pitch her ideas for ‘Saturday Night in LA.’ The magazine was interested in casting a wide net across the city’s diverse cultural landscape, from a prom in mid-Wilshire to a bingo parlor in South Pasadena.

I took the difficult route and pitched photographing my 14-year-old daughter, Kayla, at a sleepover at her friend’s house.  No crew, no equipment, no hair, makeup, wardrobe, props, or catering. It was just Kayla, her friend Dani Leshgold, their iPhones, and a box of Nilla Wafers.

Fortunately, all of the lighting in the Leshgold family room was on rheostats, so I was able to selectively dim the lights and use the light coming from the girls’ phones as the key light and the light from the television as the fill.

My Sony RX100 II had enough dynamic range to handle the highlights and all of the shadows, allowing me to capture the girls in their natural habitat: on a couch on Saturday night, ‘watching’ a movie while simultaneously texting their friends, checking Facebook, and keeping tabs on Instagram.” —Art Streiber
