Last month, while he was in Los Angeles to teach a weekend workshop for Leica Akademie, Doug Menuez carved out time to shoot a mini-photo essay on members of the skateboard scene in Venice Beach, both past and present.

“I got to meet and photograph the legendary Juice magazine publisher and owner Terri Craft with Juice editor/photographer/videographer, writer, and killer skateboarder Dan Levy,” says Doug. “I also met Shota Kubo, a skateboard wizard whose father, Shogo Kubo, is in the Skateboarding Hall of Fame, and the truly legendary surfboard shaper Jeff Ho, also a Juice editor. He’s an artist, skateboarder, surfer, and founder of Zephyr Competition Team back in the Dogtown days. It’s not overstating it to say his influence helped define the skate culture.

“Basically,” adds Doug, “we visited the headquarters of the soul of skateboarding.”

Below, some of the highlights from Doug’s essay “Venice Skateboard Soul.” See more here.
