As part of a new visual arts initiative culminating in an auction on May 11 at Christie’s, Steinway & Sons commissioned visual artist Mark Bradford to create an original work using a Steinway Spirio as the medium. And the famed piano company commissioned Nigel Cox to photograph the resulting work, a dazzling transformation created with paper and bleach that Bradford titled Apollo.
“Bradford’s Steinway Model M…recalls his time spent working at his mother’s salon as a hairdresser,” Steinway & Sons explain in a statement at their website. Read more about the collaboration, which also features an original musical composition by Robert Glasper called “Still Shining,” here.
